What can I say about Marje? I realize that she was all a son in law could ever ask for in a mother -in-law. I met Marje about 27 years ago at one of the family functions at Karen’s place. I was not looking forward to it at all. Meeting the girlfriend’s parent and family ugh! We arrived at Karen’s place and I was introduced to Marje and right away we clicked. She made me feel right at home and talked to me and asked me all kinds of questions about my family. We had so much in common it seemed.
We were both fellow Nova Scotians, Bluenosers, even though she was from Cape Breton. I never held that against her!
We both liked to talk about and tell stories about home.
But the biggest one was that we both were deaf!
Dawn, Marje and I travelled the roads together on Cruises, Las Vegas, Florida and several drives to Nova Scotia so she could see her sister and relatives in Halifax area. She was awesome to travel with, so easy to get along with, agreeable to anything and had so many stories to tell.
One of my most memorable trips was to see her sister Rita in Antigonish. Marje and I drove down stopping off in Grand Falls to stay the night. We were checking in and the guy at the front desk gave us a funny look when we said one room. He quickly said, with two beds? We both had a laugh at that one. As we walked to the car Marje turns to me and says that will give him something to talk about.
We arrived in Antigonish the next day and went to Rita’s. Rita was pretty much out of it at that time. She did so many off the wall things that had Marje and me snickering and laughing. She would go to have a smoke by the window and turn the thermostat up as high as it would go. I would get up and turn it down. She would come back and crank it up again. We had take-out and used her silverware, she would clean up and throw out the silverware in the recyclables and then tell us that the cleaner was stealing them. She had a 2 bedroom apartment and no couch. Marge said its ok we will share the second bedroom. It had two beds. She was pretty surprised. Remember she was in the Alzheimer’s stage. I got up the next day and went to visit my relatives in Halifax and I guess she asked Marje if I was her boy toy. We had a good laugh driving home.
She will be sadly missed.
