Johnny Cash was a great guy. I got to know him well when I stayed at my cottage at Lake Lyster. He’d often visit, with a big smile and happy go lucky manner. Our cottages were not more than 50 meters apart. I enjoyed hearing his stories about his fire fighting days when he worked as a fireman. A supreme handyman, he had the skills to build almost anything. The deluxe chicken coup he made was one of my favourites. His chickens had better accommodations than I ever had in my 39 years in the Army. It wasn’t lost on him that he had the same name as the great American singer and song writer Johnny Cash. From time to time, after a delicious dinner, lots of booze, and with many good friends around, he’d pick up a guitar and sing Johnny Cash songs. We all loved it, laughing, hooting, hollering, and singing along with him. He was the perfect neighbour and friend. If you needed to borrow tools, machines, even his vehicles, he was always happy to oblige. You always knew too that if there was a problem with a neighbour’s cottage like a fire, flood, or robbery, he’d be quick to call and help out. He was a good upstanding citizen. He loved his wife Sylvie deeply. It was obvious to us when he’d regale us with fantastic stories about how Sylvie hiked the Appalachian Trail. He followed her along in a Winnebago. From that mobile camper he’d meet up with Sylvie when the trail crossed a road. She’d stay the night. He’d whip up hardy home cooked meals, provide clean accommodations and a hot shower, and deliver warm and comforting moral support. He was there for her. Johnny will be truly missed. May he Rest In Peace.

Johnny Cash was a bright spark of our summers at the cottage – his wit, warmth, and presence made those days unforgettable. He’ll be deeply missed but never forgotten.
