It has taken me some time to absorb the loss of my brother, Ralph. I hardly knew him. I could count on one hand the time we’ve seen or visited with each other since I was quite young. In the end days before he took his leave, he reached out to chat with me on our phones using FaceTime. I never use that feature so it was a bit disconcerting to speak with someone who was, not only a brother I barely knew, but was my brother dying. It seemed that no matter the distance, the lack of communication, or even the tragic circumstances that created the opportunity to be his sister; we were inextricably attached. We spoke comfortably about things that were or were not important. We shared some thoughts about life and death and even a few about my dog that was along for a walk when I showed Ralph the river valley I live above. What I felt during those conversations and what I know of him from the past are worth noting. Through tragedy he persevered. He demonstrated strength, self-sacrifice, loyalty, kindness, and a faith that never faltered. I believe his family would say that he was all these things and more. What I want to say to all family and friends is that Ralph was a genuine person. He lived what he believed, he was a man of integrity and I will miss chatting with him. What I most enjoyed is that he had a great sense of humour, so did Dad Brenneman. It was an honour to know him and I share in the grief of his loss. Linda
