I met Jose at a showing of his work in Halifax about twenty-five years ago. I chose to purchase a painting with a few bucks my Grandmother left to me.
I think of him and her, daily, when I glance at my painting.
Jose and his wife supported my Flamenco Night for our local soccer group some years back. Highlight of that night was Jose dancing.
You made a mark on many lives, Senor.

At the beginning of my clerical, later administrative, career at Acadia in 1988, I was the lone occupant of the Steno Pool. In that capacity I served a number of departments, the Spanish Department being one. It was a busy office and it looked like a place where much work was done but not much care was taken to improve its ambiance. That's when Prof. Valverde took over. He determined that what the office needed was some colour and colour it he did by hanging a number of his canvases on the walls. As I learned to appreciate his works of art, I came also to appreciate him. He was kind, took care to teach me about his paintings and what they represented. I have thought of him often over the years since. He offered me one of his paintings (to purchase) that I particularly liked. I declined the offer and have been rather sorry these years since. But remembering Prof. Valverde, his colourful works of art and, most especially, his kindness in making my working environment so pleasant lays softly in my memory. My deepest condolences.
