It's with great sadness that I hear of the passing of "uncle Gerry". Gerhard and his wife Angelique and their 2 children Heinz and Mira lived in Forest Hill and had finished their basement with three student apartments. I stayed in one of those apartments each year for 5 years from 1965 to my graduation in 1970. We called Gerhard uncle Gerry and had a great deal of respect for him. Indeed in 2nd year we took his surveying course using some antiquated K & E theodolites and then struggled to get the program to work using the punch cards on UNB's main frame computer. Uncle Gerry was a wonderfully patient man, he had to be to put up with our basement antics. I clearly recall his coming to the top of stairs on more than one occasion saying "vot's going on down zere?" when someone had forgotten the toast in the toaster. I graduated from UNB in 1970 with a BSc in Mechanical engineering and a few years after graduation had the occasion to yet again rent a room in uncle Gerry's basement when I worked for a time at ADI in Fredericton. I think it's fair to say we all loved uncle Gerry and for Angelique, Mira and Heinz please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of a wonderful husband, father and a very fine and gentle man.
