I am saddened to hear of Brian's passing. I worked with Brian for many years in the Roasters at Teck and we became good friends. I reflect back on the times and laughs we had together and would like to share a few with you and the first 2 are of his boats: - the first is of an old wooden boat with an out board motor and he wanted to take me for a ride up the Columbia River from Gyro Park, I thought well I can swim and there are lifejackets so why not. We launched the boat and made it up river a little past Rivervale and decided to go back, as we were approaching the boat launch the engine quits. We start getting taken back out to the middle of the river in the fast current and appeared to be heading for the new bridge's cement support structure, Brian is frantically fiddling with the engine, adjusts a needle valve on the carburetor and the engine starts and we motor away from the bridge structure with about 50 feet to spare. - a few years later Brian talks me into going fishing on the Arrow Lake past Syringa Park in his modern 2 person fiberglass boat shaped like a bath tub. I went as there are not to many bridges on the lake, it was a great warm summers day so out we went Brian weighing about 290 pounds, me about 220, the engine, gas tank and fishing gear about another 100 pounds. To sea we went with our bag of Arby's beef and cheese sandwiches and a few cans of pop got out in the middle of the lake with lines out and trolled for a while but the fish were not biting so we gave up on fishing got into our swim suits and had a swim out in the middle of the lake got back in the boat ate our sandwiches and called it a day of fishing. We went back to boat launch with out incident. As I was helping load the boat on the truck I notice a label which read Maximum Load 400 pounds- I said to Brian have you ever read this, he smiles and says something like " real men to not read directions" I say well by my arithmetic we were only about 200 pounds overloaded. What else could we do but smile and never do that again. At work Brian would come up with what he thought of as advice and good ide as which he dubbed this service " Brian's Excellent Advice ".l Brian and his family took up cross country skiing and said how much they enjoyed it and I should try it. I said I do not like snow and cold weather and I will pass. He kept persisting that I try it and talked me into coming out with him and Barb. He lent me his son's Skis and boots to try it out. Off we went to Nance Greene Lake cross country ski trail. I fell several times and could not keep all of my heels on the skis and Brian saying what is the matter you have to keep your heels on the skis. I say I don't know you are the instructor here and he says he does not know why either. We made it around the lake and stopped at the cabin for a break then decided to do another loop, as I was putting the skis back on I jokingly said does it matter which foot di they go on, Brian says I don't think so but I looked on the bottom and there was an L and R on each ski. I put the L on my left foot and the R on the right foot, off we went my heels stayed on the skis and I did not fall as much. Brian's Excellent Advice was right about cross country skiing as I took it up enjoyed it for many years. Barb and family I am sorry for Brian's passing, I am glad I knew him and your family and Betty and I get you call you our friends and cherish the times we had with you.
