At the end of October 2017 I couldn't get the thought of Don out of my mind, it was a driving force that wouldn't leave. I felt I had to get in touch with him. He mattered in my life and definitely made a difference to me. I tried unsuccessfully to find him on facebook, and in the telephone directory in Fort Nelson, with no luck. The feeling was so strong that the thought kept coming back. I found the obituary last week and realized the reason. We meet people during our lives who really leave a mark but you are young and life shows you different paths which are alluring and lead you away. But if you love someone deeply, no matter the path, you never lose that tie that binds. I don't mean a blind passionate love but a deep love and respect for someone special.
Don and I met in Fort Simpson, which was sixty years ago and would be in touch a few times over the years. I also knew Dick & Vera, the adage the apple did not fall from the tree was evident. He was always there as a friend and I will miss him dearly, just knowing he is not on this earth. One of Don's strengths was he always lived his life to the fullest and loved to laugh and smile and his love of the outdoors knew no bounds. I have been through a lot through the years, but no matter where I was or where I lived I knew I could count on Don.
I realize now, he also taught me the value of friendship and the importance of keeping in touch. He influenced my life in so many ways and I will miss him deeply forever.
